Description

The AgustaWestland AW139 is a 15-seat medium sized twin-engined helicopter manufactured by AgustaWestland. The AW139 is a new generation medium twin-turbine helicopter setting new standards against which all medium twins are measured. Designed with inherent multi-role capability and flexibility of operation, the AW139 is capable of carrying up to 15 passengers at very high speed, in a most spacious and comfortable cabin. The ample baggage compartment is accessible both from the cabin and externally. The AW139 provides the best power reserve of any helicopter in the medium twin-engine class. A brand new helicopter, it fully complies with the latest stringent requirements in terms of performance and safety. The AW139 can be used for a wide range of applications including executive/VIP transport, EMS/SAR, offshore OGP support, fire fighting, law enforcement, paramilitary and military roles. The AW139M is the militarised version of the AW139, a new generation intermediate twin-turbine helicopter setting the standard against which all intermediate twins are now measured. Building on the considerable success of the AW139 twin helicopter in the world-wide military and homeland security market, the AW139M has been developed to meet the specific requirements of military, homeland security and government users.

Design
The AW139 is a conventional layout twin-engined transport helicopter. It has a five-bladed fully articulated main rotor with a titanium hub and composite blades and a four-bladed tail rotor. It is fitted with a retractable tricycle landing gear. It is flown by a crew of two pilots, with up to 15 passengers accommodated in three rows of five. The cabin is 25% larger than that of the AW139 and can accommodate up to 16 troops with light equipment or 12 fully equipped troops. The cabin is fitted with a large sliding door on each side for fast embarking and disembarking. Designed specifically to meet the multi-mission demands of a new world, the AW139, a member of the AgustaWestland Family, surpasses all other medium twin-engine helicopters in capability, speed, range and versatility. The AW139 can be equipped with either a dedicated EMS interior or with quick change self contained units and MEDEVAC equipment for maximum flexibility. Furthermore the avionic system reduces pilot workload, allowing the crew to concentrate on EMS operations.
Avionics
Leading edge technology includes a Honeywell Primus Epic fully integrated avionics system, a 4-axis digital AFCS and large flat panel colour displays in the cockpit.
Propulsion
The Agusta AW139 is propelled by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6C-67C turbines, together with a state-of-the-art 5-bladed main rotor, deliver a high cruise speed even in demanding conditions at all weights. They deliver an outstanding power to weight ratio, which allows Category “A” performance capabilities with no limitations in a wide range of operating conditions including ‘hot and high’. The AW139 delivers best-in-class performance with a cruise speed of up to 165 knots / 306 kph, a range in excess of 500 nm / 927 km, endurance of 5 hours, and superior hover performance.
Armament
The AW139M airframe and cabin have provisions for a wide range of mission and utility equipment which enable a true multi-role capability. The platform has a spacious cabin with large doors for easy ingress and egress of personnel and unloading of material and is capable of carrying and deploying a wide range of troop, equipment or weapon payloads. Exceptional agility and high power-to-weight ratio enable the aircraft to operate tactically, flying nap of the earth profiles with unrivalled hot and high performance. Additionally, the AW139M offers air manoeuvre for command and control personnel, specialist teams, counter-terrorism tasks, close battle casualty evaluation and an additional command and control capability. Crew and occupants can be protected by modular armour protection in the cabin and cockpit. Fire support can be provided by window or door mounted machine guns. A Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) and Counter Measures Dispensing System (CMDS) provides self-protection from missiles. IFF and Blue Force Tracker are also available. Subject to market demand, additional kits will become available including: IR suppressors to reduce the already low thermal signature of the AW139, armoured pilot and co-pilot seats to improve crew protection, ballistic-tolerant self-sealing fuel tanks, as well as weapons aiming and an external stores system (ESS) capable of carrying Heavy Machine Gun pods, and 2.75” (70mm) air-to-ground rockets.
- Internal weapons (general purpose machine gun)
- Sniper rifle
- External weapons (Heavy machine gun pods & 2.75” rocket pods)
- Weapon management system with head up display
- Forward firing rockets and machine guns
- Pintle mounted machine gun
- Air-to-Surface Missile system
