Senegal to buy South Korean KAI FA-50 Light Combat Aircraft

Senegal is making strides in bolstering its air capabilities with the acquisition of FA-50 Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft from South Korea, according to a report by Lionel Ekene in Military Africa. Although the exact number and total value of the aircraft remain undisclosed, it is rumored that Senegal has ordered up to four FA-50s for an estimated $147 million.

The FA-50 is a supersonic multi-role aircraft, developed in collaboration between Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Lockheed Martin. It is based on the advanced training aircraft T-50, which has been in service with the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) since 2013. This versatile aircraft is equipped with tactical data links, precision-guided munitions, and self-protection systems, enabling it to perform various missions, including air-to-air combat, air-to-ground, and air-to-sea operations.

Senegal's decision to opt for the FA-50 came after the failure of a previous agreement with Aero Vodochody for four L-39NG light attack aircraft, Lionel Ekele recalls. General Sarr Pape Souleymane, head of the Senegalese Air Force, sought a new supplier for light combat aircraft and ultimately chose KAI's FA-50. At present, Senegal operates a fleet of 25 aircraft, predominantly helicopters, with six Daher Socata TB 30 training aircraft for instructional purposes. The introduction of the FA-50 will significantly enhance Senegal's air capabilities while providing a cost-effective and proven platform for its pilots.

Senegal is not the only African nation interested in the FA-50. In September 2022, KAI announced its imminent delivery of FA-50s to an undisclosed client in Africa, which could potentially be Senegal or Egypt. Egypt has already signed an agreement with South Korea for local production of T-50/FA-50 aircraft, potentially requiring up to 100 units.

The FA-50 has also garnered attention from countries in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. As Lee Bong-keun, vice president and general manager of KAI's international business division, highlighted, "Countries are looking for mature, proven, and cost-effective aircraft," making the FA-50 an attractive choice.
