The
C-27J Spartan is a military transport aircraft. The C-27J is an advanced
derivative of Alenia Aeronautica's G.222 (C-27A Spartan in US service),
with the engines and systems of the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules.
The aircraft was selected as the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) for the
United States military.
Alenia Aeronautica, headquartered in Rome, Italy is a company of the
Finmeccanica Group. The C-27J Team will produce and missionize the C-27J
Spartan military transport aircraft for the United States government
and other international customers. The C-27J Spartan is a military airlifter
specifically designed for cargo and troops, paratroop and material air
drop, medical evacuation and day/night all-weather operations. The C-27J
is currently under production for the Italian Air Force (12 units) and
the Hellenic Air Force (12 units), and the Bulgarian Air Force (5 Units).
The aircraft is also competing in Canada for its Fixed Wing Search and
Rescue replacement as well as around the world. |

Design | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
C-27J is based on the proven and reliable C-27A airframe also sold to
the USAF as the Spartan. Since it was originally designed as a true
rugged military airlifter, the C-27J is highly interoperable with heavier
models such as the C-130s, and incorporates state-of-the-art technologies
throughout its propulsion system, avionic system, cockpit layout and
data presentation . |

Avionic | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
two-pilot cockpit is night-vision-goggle (NVG) compatible. The flight
deck is very similar to that of the C-130J Hercules. The electronic
flight instrumentation system (EFIS) incorporates five liquid crystal
head-down colour displays. The C-27J Spartan has a state-of-the-art
suite of standard off-the-shelf military equipment integrated with military
standard digital data bus architecture. The avionics represent the most
advanced system available in tactical airlifters, and is compatible
with emerging Future Air Navigation System (FANS) requirements. The
avionics and cockpit were designed with growing capability in mind to
satisfy specific customer needs. The C-27J Spartan is equipped with
electronic flight instrumentation system (EFIS), incorporating five
liquid crystal color multi-functional display units (CMDU) that provide
aircraft control, operations and navigation data. |

Propulsion | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
C-27J has outstanding threat avoidance capabilities, including a take-off
ground run of about 1,900 feet at maximum take off weight on an unpaved
surface. In a tactical environment, the aircraft is capable of climbing
to 10,000 ft in 3 minutes, descending from 10,000 ft in under 2.5 minutes
and can handle up to 3.0g forces. At maximum landing weight, the C-27J
has a ground roll of less than 1,115 ft. The
C-27J is equipped with two AE 2100D3 turboshaft engines, supplied by
Rolls-Royce Defence North America (formerly Allison). The engines are
rated at 4,637shp. Messier-Dowty supply the six-bladed composite propellers.

Capability | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
primary roles of the C-27J are cargo transport, troop transport, and
material and paratroop air drop. Other missions include maritime patrol,
tactical operations, medical evacuation, ground refuelling, fire-fighting
and aerial spraying. The C-27J Spartan is the perfect fixed-wing multipurpose
cargo aircraft for today’s diverse missions. Extremely maneuverable
and versatile, the rugged C-27J boasts the highest power-to-weight ratio
in its class and the ability to perform 3.0g force maneuvers in the
style of fighter aircraft, enabling tight turns and a rapid climb and
descent. The C-27J can fly farther, faster and higher than any other
twin engine military transport aircraft in its class. The C-27J features the unique capability to vary cargo floor height and continuously adjust attitude, ensuring easy loading and unloading of large volume, highdensity payloads without ground support equipment and also facilitating drive-in/out of vehicles so that they can be in use immediately. The C-27J offers significantly more capability than any other aircraft in its class. Its large flight envelope allows it to carry out the most demanding tactical missions quickly, safely and effectively. The C-27J’s structural strength, power and system redundancy provide a high level of safety and an unbeatable mission accomplishment rate. |
