The
Z-19 or WZ-19 is a Chinese-made attack helicopter based on the Z-9W
light helicopter. The Z-19 is designed and manufactured by the Chinese
Company Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation. The Z-19 attack helicopter
is mainly used for anti-tank missions and against other ground targets.
The Z-19 is comparable in capabilities to current generation of attack
helicopter such as the American Hughes AH-64 "Apache" and
the Russian Mil Mi-28 "Havoc". To compare with the Z-10 which
is in the category of heavy attack helicopter, the Z-19 is lighter.
The Z-19 made its first flight in May 2010. The Z-19 is also intended
for export customers. The Z-10 was unveiled for the first time to the
public during the AirShow China 2012 in Zhuhai. The Z-19 is now in service
with the Chinese Army. Several China's independently-developed WZ-19
armed helicopters of an army aviation regiment under the Shenyang Military
Area Command (MAC) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) carried
out air-to-ground missile firing tests in airspace of south Liaoning
province on November 12, 2012. Despite the extreme climate conditions,
the helicopters achieved a hundred percent hit rate. The Chinese Army
Aviation Department of the GSH (General Staff Headquarters) has showed
that those new-type helicopters that troop units had equipped with have
already formed the capability to carry out operations under various
weather conditions and in complex environments as well as to perform
diversified tasks. |

Design | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
Z-19 is a twin-seat tandem helicopter with a similar mechanical layout
to the Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin series as the Z-9 series are license-built
versions of the Dauphin. The WZ-19 features a slim forward fuselage
and a tandem cockpit layout similar to those of Z-10, but some information
said with reversed seating - the pilot sitting in the front seat and
gunner in the back seat. The Z-19 is fitted with crew cabin protected
by armor plates, crash-resist seats and non-retractable front landing
gears. The exhausts ports help reduce the employment of the infrared
signal design. The empennage is nearly identical to that as found on
the Z-9 with its shrouded Fenestron tail rotor, high-reaching main vertical
tail fin and a pair of vertical stabilizers supported on short pylons
along the tail stem. |

Propulsion | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
Z-19 attack helicopter is powered by two WoZhou WZ8A engines, rotor,
aft fuselage and tail section (including Fenestron tailrotor) with minor
modifications from H425 (an upgrade variant of the Z-9 helicopter).
The dual engine layout powers the four-blade main rotor as well as the
shrouded tail rotor in a conventional design. The WZ-19 helicopter has
a weight of 4,500kg, empty weight 2,350kg, max cruising speed 245km/h,
max climb rate 9m/s, range 700km, ceiling (out of ground effect) 2,400m,
endurance of over 3 hours. |

The
turret mounted at the front of the Z-19 is equipped with FLIR, TV and
a laser range finder. |

Armament | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The
Z-19 can carry a wide range of weapons load including 23mm gun pods,
anti-tank and air-to-air missiles giving it a wide-ranging punch. The
Z-19 also can carry the air-to-air and air-to-ground weapon package
similar to that of Z-9WA below a pair of stub wings, together with KD-8
ATGMs, PL-90 AAMs as well as 23mm gun pods and rocket launchers. |
