Germany moves forward with its Heavy Transport Helicopter programme

Germany is moving forward with its Heavy Transport Helicopter programme in order to replace the Sikorsky CH-53G platforms, which will have their flight hours completed within the next decade. German military officials have confirmed that the Sikorsky CH-53K and Boeing CH-47F have been shortlisted. The final decision is expected by the end of this year.

The German Ministry of Defence concluded in December 2015 and published in January 2016 its “Military Air Strategy” document (Milita¨rische Luftfahrtstrategie). The document mentions that the new helicopter should start being delivered in 2022. Therefore, the contract should be signed by 2018.

The new helicopter will replace the older CH-53G ones and will assume air transportation of troops and cargo, MEDEVAC, special operations, combat search and rescue and evacuation of personnel and civilians. Bundeswehr’s plans are for the procurement of 40 to 70 units. Nevertheless, Lt. Col. Detlef, the representative of the Air Force at the DBwV federal procurement agency said at the Bundeswehr Journal that a total of 59 units would be procured.

Meanwhile, in an effort to push its proposal, Boeing has opened a research and technology branch in Munich. After Airbus’ expansion in the US, Boeing’s research team of ten engineers will try to expand the company’s participation in German projects, open its doors to the public and develop collaborations with local firms, with the aim of expanding in the German market. Under these circumstances, the technology branch could evolve into a full-scale centre.
