Northrop Grumman & Raytheon won contracts from USAF for work on JSTARS program
 
The two US-based defense giant Northrop Grumman and Raytheon Company respectively received a $70 mn and a $60 mn contracts from the US Air Force for radar risk reduction efforts intended for the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System Recapitalization (JSTARS Recap) program, the US Department of Defense announced on March 24, 2016.

The two defense contractors will provide nonrecurring hardware and software engineering activities to ensure radars are scaled to meet JSTARS Recap Wide Area Surveillance requirements. The activities will be performed at Baltimore, Maryland, and is expected to be complete by Sept. 30, 2017, the US DoD said.

In December, the US Department of Defense approved moving ahead with the next generation of the program, despite budget concerns.

JSTARS provides ground situation information through communication via secure data links with air force command posts, army mobile ground stations and centres of military analysis far from the point of conflict. JSTARS provides a picture of the ground situation equivalent to that of the air situation provided by AWACS.

The JSTARS program developed by Northrop Grumman uses a Boeing 707-300 equipped with electronically scanned array radar that provides surveillance that supports military ground operations. The upgraded program is designed to use a much smaller jet, according to the US Air Force.
