Russia's Su-35S multirole fighter jet to have its baptism of fire in Syria

Russia is preparing to test the next-generation Su-35S fighters for the first time in combat in Syria, a military source told the Russian newspaper Kommersant on Monday. "The General Staff has decided to run a field test of the brand-new Su-35S in Syria for the first time ever," the Kommersant newspaper cited its source as saying.

According to information obtained by the local newspaper, the first four jets were handed over to the Russian Aerospace Forces last fall. Several days ago, they were transported through Iran and Iraq to the Russian airbase in Hmeymim near Latakia in northwestern Syria.
The Su-35 (NATO code name: Flanker-E) is a single-seat, twin-engined multifunctional fighter aicraft designed and manufactured by the Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi. The Su-35S is powered by two Sturn / UFA AL-31F 117S turbofan engines with thrust-vectoring nozzle control. The It is fitted with a X-band multimode phased array Irbis-E radar, supplied by Tikhomirov Scientific-Research Institute of Instrument Design (NIIP). The aircraft has 12 hardpoints for carrying external weapons and stores. The aircraft's air-to-air missiles can include the Vympel R-27 (Nato designation AA-10 Alamo), the Vympel radar-guided medium-range R-77 (AA-12 Adder) and the Vympel short-range infrared-guided R-73E (AA-11 Archer). The Russian Air Force has 40 Su-35S in its inventory as of November 2015 plus 50 ordered on January 2016. |
