Russia's Il-76MD-90A airlifter starts second stage of factory tests

The first new Il-76MD-90A airlifter began the second stage of factory tests, the Il Company said. "The first test model of the heavy military-transport aircraft Il-76MD-90A completed the test flight from Ulyanovsk-Vostochny airfield. The aircraft has an upgraded piloting and navigational complex, an onboard defense unit and new-generation communications complex," it said.

Government acceptance tests of the first model of the new Il-76MD-90A airlifter are to be completed in 2018, Director General of the UAC-Transport Aircraft Company Vildan Zinnurov said.

"Today we speak about factory tests. They will begin two-four weeks after the maiden flight which took place today," he said adding the tests will last close to three months.

"The second stage of government acceptance tests will begin after that. It will take from 12 to 18 months," Zinnurov said.

The first Il-76MD-90A successfully completed its maiden flight after an upgrade at the factory. "Many things were improved and some systems and equipment changed 100 percent. The flight opens a new life of the aircraft - factory flight tests which will develop into the second stage of government acceptance tests. The control system Kupol-III-76M has been completely upgraded and will be tested now," said Valery Tokarev, director of the Il-76 and Il-112V program at Aviastar JV Aircraft Works in Ulyanovsk.

The flight lasted close to two hours. "It proceeded successfully, the aircraft is good. All regimes and systems were tested from takeoff up to an altitude of 7 thousand meters. All systems operated normally and the aircraft is ready for further test trials," Merited Test Pilot of Russia Nikolai Kuimov said after landing.

The first stage of government acceptance tests was carried out jointly by the crews of the Il Company and the Russian defense ministry. It comprised 38 flights to test the performance of the Kupol-III-76M(A) piloting and navigational complex and all its components, the fuel system, automatic pilot and radio communications. The maximum speed and G-limit regimes were tested. The aircraft flew with maximum takeoff and landing weights. It also tested go-around in case one of the two engines fails.

Il-76MD-90A is a highly modernized version of Il-76. It is distinguished by enhanced plane and undercarriage constructions, increased takeoff weight from 190 to 210 tons and maximum payload from 48 to 52 tons. The range with maximum payload is 5 thousand kilometers. The aircraft can take off and land on ground and reinforced concrete tarmacs located at altitudes from 300 to 3000 meters above the sea level. The maximum carrying capacity of the aircraft is 60 tons.

The new piloting and navigational complex, the automatic control and communications system increase flight safety, the precision of navigation and airdrop. The latest modification of the popular airlifter is distinguished by new equipment, including a "glass cockpit", modern PS-90A-76 engines, a modified wing and enhanced undercarriage. The Il-76MD-90A is used to design refueling tanker Il-78M-90A.
