Saab and Defence Technologies add JAS-39 Gripen fighter aircraft to their industrial cooperation
 
Swedish defence and security company Saab has signed a new industrial co-operation agreement with the Malaysian company Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (Deftech), a wholly owned subsidiary of DRB-HICOM Berhad. The intent is to deepen and broaden the existing relationship between the two companies by adding the Gripen system to their joint planning.

This new agreement between Saab and Deftech outlines planned industrial cooperation which will explore areas of technology transfer and bring further expertise to Malaysia.

The agreement covers areas such as Gripen-related maintenance and support activities, design and manufacturing of advanced composite systems and associated technology transfer.

“For Saab, the agreement with Deftech is an important step in order to do further business in Malaysia and surrounding countries,” says Thomas Lindén, Head of Saab Malaysia.

In 2011, the two companies signed an industrial co-operation teaming agreement to collaborate on an airborne early warning and control system. This co-operation was further expanded in March 2013 with the signature of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) covering various technology areas. Today’s agreement brings the partnership between Saab and Deftech to a new level.

This partnership is based on the extensive experience, strength and expertise of both companies. Besides supporting the Malaysian government's defence programmes with solutions that enhance the nation’s operational capabilities, the new agreement will also create business opportunities for both parties.

Saab has a long history of supplying high-performance, cost-efficient defence equipment to the Malaysian Armed Forces. This includes naval and land radars, airborne self-protection systems for helicopters and fighters, naval command and control systems and army support weapons, including anti-tank weapons.
