It was previously reported that the Samara-based Aviakor Aviation Plant will optimize Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers. It will essentially improve the aircraft operational capability, enabling them to better meet the requirements of the Russian Aerospace Force. In November, the plant handed over to the Russian Defense Ministry officials the first upgraded Tu-95MS.

The Tu-160 strategic missile carrier, NATO reporting name Blackjack, is designed for striking at the vital assets of the enemy by long-range cruise missiles. The aircraft has a swing wing and is built based on the integral low-wing scheme. The maximum take-off weight is 275 tons, length 54.1 m. The cruising speed is 850 km/h, maximum speed 1,800 km/h. The operational ceiling is 15,000 m.

The missile carrier is powered by four NK-32 turbofan engines with an afterburner. According to the Military Balance publication, US, in service with the Russian Aerospace Force are 16 Tu-160s.

The in-depth upgraded Tu-95MS strategic missile carrier, NATO reporting name Bear-H, is designed for striking at enemy facilities by Kh-55 family of strategic cruise missiles. There are two versions of the aircraft: Tu-95MS-6 and Tu-95MS-16. The aircraft is 49.13 m long with a wingspan of 50.4 m. The maximum speed is 830 km/h, ceiling 10,500 m. Tu-95MS is powered by four NK-12MP engines. The maximum take-off weight is 185 t. According to the Military Balance publication, US, in service with the Russian Aerospace Force are 62 Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers, 31 Tu-95MS-6s and just as many Tu-95MS-16s.

This type of aircraft participated in massive strikes against the Islamic State, banned in Russia terrorist group facilities in mid-November 2015.
