At DSEI 2023, UK-based aircraft developer Aeralis is showcasing its modular light jet aircraft design. The spotlight is on the Advanced Jet Trainer, the first in a series of variants based on this design, marking an advancement in military aviation.

A core principle of Aeralis's approach is modularity, forming the foundation for an aircraft capable of adapting to diverse roles across various markets. Following an exhaustive design review led by Sir Julian Young, Aeralis introduced an innovative wing architecture that includes both an inner and outer wing, providing the aircraft with maneuverability across a broad spectrum of speeds, including transonic capability.

The aircraft's versatility is underscored by its ability to take on multiple configurations, including Advanced Jet Trainer, Aggressor, Companion, ISTAR, and Tanking options. All these variants share a foundation in the Common Core Fuselage (CCF), allowing customers to interchange modules and tailor the aircraft to specific mission requirements.

Aeralis's commitment to innovation extends to the aircraft's design, which accommodates additional fuel capacity and advanced electronic capabilities. This design improvement strengthens the aircraft's overall resilience and performance. Notably, the incorporation of new wings and a redesigned fuselage eliminates the need for custom landing gear, replacing it with commercial off-the-shelf landing gear, ultimately enhancing maintainability and reducing maintenance costs.

Aeralis's modular cockpit design offers a range of functions. The single-seat configuration allows for the integration of Electromagnetic Warfare (EW) capabilities or additional fuel payload, while the dual-seat configuration enables the inclusion of an additional pilot. Additionally, the seamless integration of a full combat radar into the aircraft's nose cone enhances its combat effectiveness for ISTAR and EW configurations, supporting missions, from training exercises to combat operations.

The Aeralis jet design incorporates several features. Firstly, it boasts a wing architecture optimized for both high and low speeds, including transonic capabilities. Additionally, the fuselage shape has been reimagined to accommodate electronic warfare capabilities or extra fuel, enhancing versatility. Another notable aspect is the modular cockpit design, offering single and dual seat configurations and the potential for uncrewed operation. Furthermore, the inclusion of a comprehensive combat radar system integrated into the aircraft's nose cone enhances its capabilities for a range of missions, from training exercises to combat operations.
