The primary tasks are to manage and coordinate efforts around the EU's external borders in the Mediterranean. Here, the aircraft's crew must detect, identify, report and track vessels in the designated areas of operation across the Mediterranean.

The monitoring of the Mediterranean is done to counter illegal migrants, smugglers and other illegal activities and, if necessary, participate in search and rescue.

The CL-604 Challenger is a multi-mission, militarised version of the Bombardier Challenger 600 series of business jets. Performing maritime patrol and search & rescue missions, the aircraft is capable of landing on the short, rough gravel airstrips common in the Arctic.  Denmark has several times before contributed the Challenger aircraft to Frontex. About twice a year since 2015.
