The Russian airlifter had 70 percent of systems and mechanisms renewed to increase the payload from 40 to 60 tons, as well as the range and safety. “Il-76MD-90A can engage in most airlifting missions on a new quality level and corresponds to the current and prospective requirements of the Defense Ministry,” UAC First Deputy CEO Sergey Yarkovoy said.

Il-76MD-90A was used to develop Il-78M-90A air tanker. Work is ongoing to create A-100 Premier AEW aircraft and convertible long-range Il-78MK-90A tanker.

Aviastar-SP has been building Il-76MD-90A by the contract of October 2012. It has produced 12 airlifters, including three of the development batch. The Aerospace Forces received nine aircraft, one is operated by the Ilyushin Company for trials and one is used by the Beriev Aircraft Plant to create A-100 AEW aircraft. Another aircraft was built as Il-78M-90A tanker.
