At Dubai Airshow 2015, Russ Martin, military advisor at MBDA, and Tommaso Pani, head of anti-ship, gave us an overview of the MBDA weapons package available for the Eurofigther Typhoon: The Meteor and ASRAAM air to air missiles, the dual mode Brimstone air to ground missile, the Storm Shadow cruise missile and the Marte-ER anti-ship missile.

Meteor is the next generation Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) system designed to revolutionise air-to-air combat in the 21st Century. The weapon brings together six nations with a common need to defeat the threats of today as well as the emerging threats of the future.

ASRAAM is in service with the Royal Air Force as its Within Visual Range (WVR) Dominance weapon. The weapon is also in operational service with the Royal Australian Air Force on its F/A-18 Hornet. In WVR air combat, the ability to strike first is vital. A pilot engaging an enemy needs a missile that reacts more rapidly than ever before with the speed and agility to maximise the probability of a kill, regardless of evasive target manoeuvres or the deployment of countermeasures. ASRAAM has proven this capability.

DUAL MODE BRIMSTONE (DMB)
is the latest member of the proven Brimstone Weapon System family. DMB provides a low collateral, close air support weapon offering the fast jet operator the unique capability of engaging a wide range of target types, including fast moving vehicles / vessels in both a land and naval environment, in both direct and indirect fire modes.

Storm Shadow
provides a significant leap in the Eurofighter Typhoon’s operational capabilities, enabling the platform to deploy multiple weapons at a very long range well clear of danger from air defences. Storm Shadow, already in service with the Italian Air Force, Royal Air Force and others, is a long range weapon system designed to neutralise high value, hardened or buried targets. During Dubai Airshow 2015, MBDA announced that a Eurofighter Typhoon Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA) has successfully completed a release of the Storm Shadow, conventionally armed, stealthy, long-range stand-off precision missile.

Marte ER missile uses many of the technologies and has a great commonality with the standard Marte MK2 missile with the main difference lying in the turbo-engine propulsion system that provides a much greater effective range. Also suitable for fixed wing platforms such as MPAs and combat jets, the ER version is able to engage the same target set as the Marte MK2 but at ranges well in excess of 100 km, allowing the launch aircraft to stay at a safe stand-off distance for added platform and crew survivability.
