The Global Hawk UAV is based at NAS Sigonella (Italy). The mission reportedly had the UAV fly near Crimea and along the Russian coastline towards Sochi. The UAV never entered Russian airspace. An earlier mission had a Global Hawk flying along the borders of Ukraine's Luhansk region.

The U.S.-operated Global Hawk UAV performs regular missions flying over the self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics in eastern Ukraine.

The RQ-4 Global Hawk HALE unmanned aerial system is a high-altitude, long-endurance, remotely piloted aircraft with an integrated sensor suite that provides global all-weather, day or night intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability.
