"DOSAAF aviation has already received 16 Yak-18T. Another five aircraft are currently at the Smolensk Aircraft Works and will fly to DOSAAF airfield in the near future. Rosaviation plans to deliver a total of 21 aircraft of the type to DOSAAF," said deputy chief of the volunteer organization and Director of the Aviation Department Lieutenant-General Valery Retunsky.

Established in 1927, the DOSAAF stated goal was "patriotic upbringing of the population and preparation of it to the defense of the Motherland". Among the means to achieve this was the development of paramilitary sports.

The Yak-18T prototype had its first flight in mid-1967 and subsequently the type was placed in series production in Smolensk.

The upgraded Yak-18T of the 36 series differs from the basic Yak-18T by modern onboard equipment and devices, increased range and improved survey from the cockpit. The aircraft is powered by one piston engine with a capacity of 360HP.
