Bulgaria finally purchases MiG-29 engines from Russia
|

The Bulgarian defense ministry will buy ten RD-33 engines for MiG-29 aircraft for 21 million euro, the press service of the ministry said. Four engines will be new ones with extended life cycle and six will be supplied after maintenance, it said.

"We signed an agreement worth 42 million lev (close to 21 million euro) with a Russian company, not Polish or any other, for new engines with huge resource. As a result we shall have 16 aircraft in order. Bulgarian pilots will calmly fly Russian-made aircraft with MiG-certified engines," Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov told bTV channel.
The press service said the first two engines will arrive in Bulgaria before April 30, 2017 and the rest will be supplied by two units every next month. TASS could not obtain a comment from the MiG Corporation. Late last year the parliament of Bulgaria ratified an intergovernmental agreement with Poland on maintenance and technical servicing of Russian-made MiG-29. The MiG Corporation said it will not service Bulgarian fighter jets if Sofia agrees on their maintenance with Poland. As a result the Polish side repaired six engines for MiG-29 worth 6.138 million euro and a new maintenance agreement was then signed with Russia. |
