Russia plans to start fielding PAK DA advanced strategic bomber for 2024

Russia’s advanced strategic bomber, tentatively dubbed Future Long-Range Bomber (PAK DA), will start fielding en masse in 2024-2025, Maj. Gen. Anatoly Konovalov, deputy commander, Long-Range Aviation Command, Russian Air Force, told the Russia-based Echo Moskvy radio station in an interview.

"As for the re-armament, the current aircraft fleet will be replaced by the PAK DA. The latter’s development is on schedule. It is slated to get off the ground in 2020-2021, then the flight testing will follow, and the full-scale fielding will begin in 2024-2025 to replace the in-service [strategic bomber] fleet," he said.

According to the general, planes have a service life of 20-30 years. "The replacement of aircraft is bound to come to the fore sooner or later. As to our types of aircraft, this will be some time in the late 2020s or early ‘30s. The aircraft fleet will have to be replaced with that of a cutting-edge aircraft featuring a wide range of capabilities," he added.

The PAK DA (for "perspektivnyi aviatsionnyi kompleks dal'ney aviatsii literally" meaning "prospective aviation complex for long-range aviation") is a proposed design of strategic bomber. In 2015 it was revealed that the new PAK DA will be based on the TU-160, and will also incorporate a few systems from the PAK FA project.
