Description
The Patroller is a remote-controlled medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), designed and manufactured jointly by SAGEM and Stemme. It is based on the Stemme S-15 motor-glider. As a multi-sensors intelligence system, Patroller UAS is designed to meet military or security requirements. The Patroller UAV is able to perform several different applications, such as border and coastal surveillance and law enforcement.

The first flight was in June 2009 at Kemijarvi in Finland; it was shown at the 2009 Paris Air Show. The Patroller is a Medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (MALE) by the definition of the NATO. It completed another series of flight tests in July 2010, which demonstrated it is capable of missions lasting 20–30 hours. The Patroller was selected by the Civil Security division of the French Ministry of the Interior for operational trials in August 2010 providing image surveillance services.

Main Variants
- Patroller R: variant used for ground surveillance. It performs intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, reconnaissance and battle damage assessments missions. It features two hardpoints under the fuselage section to incorporate extra fuel tanks.
- Patroller M: variant used for maritime surveillance. The Patroller-M is a naval version in use by French Navy. It is fitted with maritime patrol radar to achieve maritime patrol operations.
- Patroller S: variant used for homeland security which can executes operations including border and coastal surveillance, road monitoring, search and rescue, environmental protection, civil protection and law enforcement. It is additionally equipped with airborne surveillance radar and can operate in piloted vehicle mode (PVM).

Design
The Sagem Patroller UAV airframe is highly based on Stemme S-15 motor-glider platform. The Patroller is a all composite construction, powered UAV with the engine mounted in the center fuselage. It has a shoulder-mounted wing, a conventional T-tail and a reinforced and retractable nose wheel landing gear. Its airframe was originally certified according to EASA CS 22 standard. The Patroller could be an optionally-piloted vehicle.

The Patroller has a length of 8.52 m, wing span of 2.45 m and height of 18 m. The standard weight of the aircraft is 660kg. The drone can carry a payload with capacity of 250 kg in its bay or in pods (optronic, radar, electronic warfare), on flights of 20 hours and over, at an altitude up to 20,000 ft.
Mobility
Sagem's Patroller UAV is powered by one four-stroke liquid air cooled Rotax 914F turbocharged engine, The UAV features a three bladed propeller at the tip of the nose section. The propeller can rotate at the rate of 5,800rpm to render propulsive force for the engine. The Rotax 914 is designed and built by the Austrian company Rotax. The engine produces 86kW of output power. The Patroller can be operated either manually from the GCS or on autonomous mode. It is fitted with an automatic take-off and landing system (ATOLS) to assist in safe landing during communication failure with the control station. This multi-sensor drone has a weak radar, heat, and sonic signature thanks to its nearly silent engine.
Payload equipment
The Patroller UAV is capable of carrying a 250kg (550lb) payload, including a maximum 80kg under each wing. The Patroller UAV is primarly fitted with a global positioning system (GPS), inertial navigation system (INS), retractable landing gear, a high-resolution Matis IR 3-5µ colour electro-optic camera, triplex avionics and a laser telemetry system. It is equipped with Euroflir 410SP electro-optic (EO) and infra-red (IR) sensors. Euroflir 410 SP is a high-performance, fully digital optronic system (16''). It provides a high-quality thermal image thanks to its latest-generation detector, plus excellent HD color video images. The basic version of Euroflir 410 SP can be equipped with up to 7 sensors: a thermal camera, an HD TV camera, both with a continuous optical zoom, a SWIR/TV dual sensor spotting scope, a laser telemeter, a laser pointer and a laser illuminator. Euroflir 410 SP can automatically track mobile targets, geo-locate zones of interest, generate automatic terrain scanning for very long range surveillance and intelligence missions at a discreet distance and for search, rescue and peacekeeping missions. The Patroller cas also be fitted with the Sagem Euroflir 350 HD EOS. This compact EOS is equipped with four sensors: a thermal camera, an HD TV camera with a continuous optical zoom, a laser telemeter and a laser pointer. Euroflir 350 can track mobile targets, designate important areas for the pilot, generate an automatic terrain scanning for search and rescue missions and provide information on sighted targets. It is additionally equipped with identification friend or foe (IFF) transponder and laser designator. The aircraft is fitted with a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to offer digital terrain elevation data (DTED). Designed and manufactured by OHB Systems, the SAR monitors vehicles moving on the ground, through a ground moving target indicator (GMTI) system. Electronic intelligence (ELINT) and communication intelligence (COMINT) are optional systems that can be integrated in the vehicle. The Patroller also has an automatic takeoff and landing system.

The Ground Control System is designed and built by Sagem. It comprises two to three station operators, a ground data terminal, a remote video terminal and full mission training simulator. Processing of the real-time data supplied by the Patroller is carried out at the GCS. The sensor data can be retrieved, stored and monitored from the control station through multifunctional control panels. Images of large file size can be transferred quickly to the control station, provided more than one bandwidth is assigned for transmission. The remote video terminal (RVT) is dedicated to intervention teams and displays high resolution images and geo-referenced videos offered by the aircraft. The RVT is linked to a directional antenna for receiving signals from the vehicle. It features a display terminal, portable receiver and vehicle adaptation kit. Sperwer mk II and Patroller share the same GCS. Communication between the vehicle and control station is enabled through Ku-band line of sight (LOS) datalink with in a range of up to 200km.
Combat use
Multi-sensors intelligence system, Patroller UAS is designed to meet military or security requirements. The Patroller UAV is able to perform several different applications, such as border and coastal surveillance, law enforcement, measures artillery guidance, support for air-land response, protection of ground forces, surveillance of major events, protection of sensitive sites, civil protection, environmental protection.

According to Sagem, the Patroller R can potentially carry Lockheed Martin AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles or laser-guided rockets, allowing it to perform combat missions.
