Description
Mi-171 is the export version of the Mi-8AMT helicopter, which is currently in production at two factories in Kazan and Ulan-Ude, fitted with more powerful turboshaft engines. Another important stage in the modernization of the 'good old' Mi-8 was associated with the introduction of the high-altitude TV3-117VM engine, the first examples of which were tested in 1985. In the course of two years the Mil EDB developed a new baseline model, the Mi-8MTV (export designation Mi-17-lV). The high-altitude engines enabled the helicopter to make take-offs and landings at altitudes of up to 4,000 m and perform horizontal flight at altitudes of up to 6,000 m. The greater service ceiling was accompanied by an improvement of other characteristics, such as rate of climb, range, etc. The new baseline model was fitted with modern equipment which included a weather radar and a long-range radio navigation (LORAN) system.
Main Variants

- Mi-171 Search and Rescue: Two external hoists 150 kg and 270 kg or 300kg for rescue baskets, 12 stretchers, NVG, FLIR, PA system, pneumatic emergency floats, Doppler weather radar, additional navigation, infrared search camera system and evacuation capability of up to 37 persons. A Search & Rescue variant is fitted with a hoist, universal lifting seat or a rescue cradle, cargoes or causalities can be taken aboard of the helicopter. Up to 12 stretchers for injured people can be installed inside the cargo cabin.
- Mi-171 Fire Fighting: Bambi bucket 3500 L or VSU 5, 4000L water drain system, transportation of up to 37 firefighters with equipment, lifting personal equipment, oxygen system. Also available is an optional Simplex system for horizontal fire fighting in high-rise buildings. A Firefighting variant can pick up water from an open reservoir, carry 4.5 cubic meters of water and discharge it in 15 seconds. The cabin can carry up to 36 firemen with full equipment. The helicopter equipped with a dropping system provides a descent of firemen in hard-to-reach places without helicopter landing.
- Mi-171SH combat variant: Bambi bucket 3500 L or VSU 5, 4000L water drain system, transportation of up to 37 firefighters with equipment, lifting personal equipment, oxygen system.
- Mi-171A/Mi-171A1: These are the latest variants developed from the Mi-171 family. They were created for the operation of civil aviation (for passengers and VIP-persons as well as cargo transportation). Thus they were developed with the priority of matters concerning safety and certification. They meet the maximum conformity of design for FAR-29 and JAR-29 aviation rules. The helicopter received approval of type certification in the Aviation Registrar of Brazil (CTA), requirements of which correspond to FAR-29.
- Mi-171M: is being designed for maximum efficiency, modernization, safety, and environment in mind. It will feature the more powerful VK-2500 engines for higher ceilings and heavier lifting. The crew will be reduced from the current 3 down to 2 reducing operation costs.

Design
Mi-171 repeats the construction of a helicopter Mi-8T. The Mi-171 is made in strength aluminum alloy metal fuselage with highly effective corrosion resistant coating. The multifunctional cargo cabin has a length of 5.34m, width of 2.34m and a height of 1.8m. It provides enough internal space to carry 4,000kg of payload. The Mi-171 can transport up to 4,000kg of cargo externally under sling. The main cabin features internal winch facilities, while the floor has tie-down rings for cargo transport. Either side of the fuselage is provided with a pod for an external fuel tank.
Avionics
Standard Russian avionics and instrumentation with BAE Systems North America engine parameters display, full western avionics with IRF, ATC, VFR, VOR, ILS, GPS, Doppler radar, available as an option.
Propulsion
The Mi-171 is powered by two Klimov TV3-117VM turboshaft engines mounted on top of the fuselage. Each engine is rated at 1,641kW. The helicopter can be optionally fitted with two VK-2500 turboshaft engines, each rated at 2,700hp. The Mi-171 can fly at a maximum altitude of 6,000m. The maximum speed of the helicopter is 250km/h. The range (without auxiliary fuel tanks) is 580km.
Accessories
The military version was provided with armour and self-sealing fuel tanks with explosion-suppression polyurethane foam filler. The armament fit included nose- and aft-mounted 7.62-mm Kalashnikov PKT machine-guns, six external stores pylons on outriggers, and flexible mounts for the troopers' assault rifles.
