Fifth successful flight for the Indian made UAV Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Rustom-1.

Indian designed and developed UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle ) RUSTOM-1 completed its fifth successful flight on Friday morning. It flew at an altitude of 760m and at a speed of 185km/hr during its 25-minute flight near Hosur. The fifth flight took place after a layoff of about five months. During this period, the lift-off and flying characteristics were improved.

The inclement weather during the monsoon added to the delay in completion of the work, said DRDO.

PS Krishnan, director, Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE)—a DRDO lab that has developed the medium-altitude, long-endurance, unmanned aerial vehicle (Male UAV)—said the flight was successful as all the modifications worked well. He said all parameters were achieved by the aeroplane, which weighs 661kg, and the total performance was satisfactory.

In specific, the objective of testing modified lift-off scheme and altitude, including speed-hold logics , which worked exceedingly well. The Indian Army has shown interest in this programme owing to the fact that this UAV has the potential for military missions like reconnaissance and surveillance, target acquisition, target designation, communications relay, battle damage assessment and signal intelligence.

RUSTOM-1 can attain a maximum speed of 280 km/hr, 6,700 m of altitude and it has an endurance of 12-15 hours, with an operating range of 250 km when fully developed.
