Russia is finalizing the activation of a second heavy bomber air division to be stationed in the east of the country, according to the Izvestia daily. The mission of the new large unit operating Tupolev Tu-95MS (NATO reporting name: Bear-H) strategic and Tu-22M3 (Backfire-C) long-range cruise missile-carrying bombers will include patrolling the Pacific in the vicinity of Japan, Hawaii and Guam.

Northrop Grumman Systems Corphas been awarded a $28 million contract for integration and installation of Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures on Germany head of state G5000 aircraft. Contractor will provide aircraft protection technology from surface-to-air infrared missiles, the US Department of Defense announced on Sept. 29, 2016.

GE Aviation successfully began testing the first full engine in the Future Affordable Turbine Engine (FATE) program under a cooperative agreement between GE and the US Army. The engine is designed to meet a series of aggressive goals including a 35% reduction in specific fuel consumption, 80% improvement in power-to-weight, 20% improvement in design life and 45% reduction in production and maintenance costs relative to currently fielded engines.

The U.S. Army awarded Lockheed Martin a $49.3 million contract to upgrade the Modernized Target Acquisition Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M-TADS/PNVS) on the AH-64E Apache helicopter. Under this contract, Lockheed Martin will produce an additional 42 Modernized Day Sensor Assembly (M-DSA) upgrade kits and spares for the U.S. Army as part of Lot 1 production. Production will take place at Lockheed Martin's facilities in Orlando and Ocala, Florida, through March 2019.
