Russia's 3rd-gen airborne command post to be based on Il-96-400 aircraft
 
Russia will develop a third-generation special airborne command post on the basis of the upgraded Ilyushin Il-96-400 aircraft, a spokesman for the United Instrument-Manufacturing Corporation told TASS on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016. The United Instrument-Manufacturing Corporation is a subsidiary of Russia’s state hi-tech corporation Rostec.

"The design project has been developed. We are waiting for a decision from military governance bodies on the work continuation," the spokesman said.

"If the decision is positive, we will develop the most modern airborne command post on the basis of the Il-96-400 aircraft," the spokesman added.

According to the spokesman, the airborne command post will be able to work with all operational and future automated control systems of the Russian Armed Forces.

"We are planning to furnish the airborne command post with advanced equipment to form and transmit control instructions to modern and future ground, naval and air military hardware of the Russian Armed Forces," the spokesman said.

The Polyot Scientific and Production Enterprise is manufacturing equipment for this airborne command post within the United Instrument-Manufacturing Corporation.

Polyot Enterprise CEO Alexei Komyakov said in August 2015 that Russia was developing third-generation airborne command posts.

CEO of the United Instrument-Manufacturing Corporation Alexander Yakunin said later that airborne command posts of this type would be manufactured in Russia within five-seven years.

The most popular airborne command posts are the US E-4B and the Russian Ilyushin Il-80 (NATO reporting name: Maxdome) aircraft developed on the basis of the Boeing 747 airliner and the Il-86 (Camber) passenger plane, respectively.
