Russia’s arms exporting company Rosoboronexport (a subsidiary of the state corporation Rostec) showcases the latest Russian-made counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) systems at the Dubai Airshow 2019 exhibition being held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) between November 17-21.

According to Rostec’s CEO Sergei Chemezov, the market of C-UAV systems is now rapidly developing. "The demand for this type of production is estimated to reach approximately USD2 billion within the five coming years. Considering these requirements, [Russia’s] enterprises, including the Rostec, are developing a wide range of electronic warfare [EW] systems of various types and in various configurations, including highly mobile devices that can be rapidly deployed at civil objects and production facilities," said Chemezov.

At the Dubai Airshow 2019, Rosoboronexport unveiled a multilayer C-UAV system incorporating the newest devices, such as Repellent, Sapsan-Bekas, Kupol, Rubezh-Avtomatika, Luch, and Pishchal.

The Repellent system provides tactical protection against UAVs. "Using emitting radio signals, the [Repellent] system detects a UAV and its ground control station. The unit recognizes a drone and direction of its maneuvers and jams its satellite navigation and control channels," said Rosoboronexport, adding that the Repellent can detects and jam UAVs at a distance of no less than 30 km. The EW system functions under the harshest climate conditions, including dust, rain, and strong wind.

The Sapsan-Bekas, Kupol, and Rubezh-Avtoamtika C-UAV systems are designed to protect critically important pieces of infrastructure. The Sapsan-Bekas is fitted with various sensors, including a camera and a cooling thermal imager and can detect a UAV and jam it at distances of up to 20 km and 30 km, respectively. The Kupol and Rubezh-Avtomatika create a dome-shaped radio-electronic space with a radius of 3 km, which allows repelling of single and group multidirectional UAV attacks.

Specific attention is paid to man-portable C-UAV systems: at the Dubai Airshow 2019, Rosoboronexport also showcases the Luch and Pishchal devices that jam UAVs at distances of 6 km and 2 km, respectively. "Staying among the lightest solutions of this class, the Pishchal weighs only 3.5 kg," said Rosoboronexport. Therefore, the system can be integrated with an individual equipment kit.

The above-mentioned multilayer system is being promoted to potential foreign customers. "We have already sent our proposals, including those regarding the creation of an area/pinpoint EW protection system, to our partners in the Middle East, North Africa, and other regions," said Rosoboronexport’s Director General Alexander Mikheev.
