The International Aviation and Space Salon "MAKS" 2017, one of the world's largest aviation shows, kicked off today at the Gromov Flight Research Institute (LII) airfield in Zhukovsky with the new MiG-35 fighter jet stealing the show with its first public appearance.

Russia`s Ministry of Defense (MoD) is planning to start the acquisition of the MiG-35 fighter since 2018, according to Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov.

"We are finishing the research and development works. We are planning to start the [MiG-35] acquisition for the Armed Forces since 2018," he said at the MAKS 2017 airshow.

The MiG-35 was officially presented for the first time during Aero India 2007 air show. It performed it maiden flight in late 2009. In November 2016, two MiG-35 fighter jets were given to the Russian Air Force for flight tests in order to confirm the technical characteristics.

The MiG-35 is a new Russian multirole fighter jet of the 4th++ generation and a further development of the MiG-29K/KUB and MiG-29M/M2 combat aircraft. Previously, the MoD was reported to have ordered two such fighters with deliveries scheduled for 2017-2018.
