The US-based defense giant Boeing has been awarded a $27 million order for a IDIQ contract for non-recurring engineering effort to prepare to manufacture Block 2 MH-47G special operations helicopter, the US Department of Defense announced on July 13.

"The Block 2 MH-47G renew will be accomplished by incorporating new, salvaged, reworked or recapped government furnished equipment or contractor furnished equipment components into an upgraded airframe for the Technology Applications Program Office," the US DoD said.

The majority of the work will be performed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

U.S. Special Operations Command, Tampa, Florida, is the contracting activity, the US DoD added.

The MH-47G is a special operations version of the Boeing CH-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopter. Compared to the previous MH-47E variant, it features more sophisticated avionics including a digital Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS), a common glass cockpit used by different helicopters such as MH-60K/Ls and CH-53E/Ks.

The MH-47G has been designed to conduct overt and clandestine infiltration, exfiltration, heavy assault, resupply, and sling load operations. It has a maximum speed of 195 mph and an operational range of 525 NM.
