"The troops of the Southern military district continue to receive new air hardware. Thus, in the first half of the year the independent helicopter regiment of the 4th Air Force and Air Defense Army based in Stavropol region received another batch of new transport and attack helicopters Mi-8MTV-5. They are an upgraded modification of Mi-8 which provides both for cargo transportation and airborne assault as well as fire support from the air," the press service said.

Specialized simulators are used to train pilots of the new craft. They fully simulate flight and fire control. Crews of the helicopter regiment have already been retrained to fly the new craft and are now engaged in planned flights.

The Mi-8MTV-5 is an improved variant of the famous "Hip" family powered by two Klimov TV3-117VM turboshaft engines and equipped with a loading ramp instead of the clam-shell doors, an additional door and a new "dolphin nose".
