A few months after having test fired a JSM from a US Air Force 416th Flight Test Squadron (FLTS) F-16C Fighting Falcon, Kongsberg now eyes integration on the Typhoon fighter aircraft. This weapon can be carried on multiple hard points on Typhoon, providing complete Role-Fit flexibility, explained BAE Systems.

The JSM is a new missile being developed in partnership with Raytheon for the Norwegian Armed Forces. The missile is based on the technology of NSM (Naval Strike Missile), which is operational in the Royal Norwegian Navy (RNoN) and Poland.

The missile flight test program started early 2015 with numerous captive carry tests on an F-16 and will continue with flight tests of increasing complexity through 2016 and 2017. The flight test program is scheduled to complete in accordance with plan in 2017.

The JSM is expected to become fully operational in 2025, while achievement of initial operational capability (IOC) is expected in 2021 with the release of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's Block 4 software.

The Joint Strike Missile, JSM can be carried externally and internally in the bomb bay of the F-35, and externally on other platforms. The JSM missile system is designed for both Anti Surface Warfare (ASuW) and Naval Fire Support (NFS) missions in Open sea, Littoral, Over land. It has a range of about 300km.

The JSM Weapon Data Link Network is a Link 16 compatible data link and is compliant with standard military equipment.

According to Kongsberg, the JSM has a 500lbs class warhead with a gross weight of 120 kg and explosive weight of 100 kg (TNT equivalent). The warhead is a combined blast (primary effect) and fragmentation (secondary effect) warhead with insensitive High Explosive (HE) charge). The warhead casing is made of titanium alloy with a steel-grid for fragmentation effect.
